Tata Motors has awakened a beast from its sleep after 34 years. The Tata Sierra, first launched in 1991, was a distinctive car in the SUV segment. With a ladder frame and a 2-litre diesel engine, it was a Macho SUV with a magnanimous road presence at that time. Now, Tata Motors has reincarnated the Sierra with all modern technology, including state-of-the-art safety features and a new Turbo petrol TDGi Hyperion engine under the hood. Let’s see the specs.

Positives of Tata Sierra
- Tata Sierra has the massive boot space in the segment with 622 litres, and a 60:40 split in the rear seats can increase the boot capacity upto 1257 litres.
- 1.5L Kryojet diesel engine with the manual gearbox is the most efficient engine in terms of fuel consumption and maintenance. With a passive SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, it doesn’t need Adblue which reduces the maintenance cost.
- The superglide suspension system with FDD (Frequency Dependent Damping) system makes the ride more premium in terms of comfort and luxury. The massive 19-inch tyres with 205 mm ground clearance can handle any rugged road with ease.
- Loaded with features from a triple 12.3 inch display with 12 JBL speakers having Dolby Atmos, breathIQ air purifier, level 2+ ADAS, gesture control tailgate, 360 camera, etc., have made Sierra the most feature-rich car in its segment.
- Tata Sierra provides DCA (Dual Clutch Automatic) gearbox with a 1.5L Revotron petrol engine at Rs 14.49 Lakh exshowroom which is the most affordable option with DCA compared to the competition in the same segment.
Negatives of Tata Sierra
- Fit and finish in many areas, like body panels, dashboard and door side panels, are not up to the mark. Tata needs to focus on the quality control part.
- The RVM controls are not ergonomically placed; they often come into conflict with the right elbow of the driver, which always changes the RVM position while driving, and the sunroof control is messed up with a single button handling many functions.
- Many software glitches can be noticed, like delayed voice command responses, the infotainment system switching off at times while driving, and lags in the 360 camera, etc. Tata needs to roll out a firmware update to fix the software bugs.
- “A” pillar visibility at turns in hills is quite uncomfortable for the driver. There are a few blind spots for the driver inside the big cabin, which makes many inexperienced drivers panic at first.
- Engine noise and tyre noise penetration inside the cabin are annoying at times. Though the engine bay is well insulated, at speeds above 80 kmph, even in the Petrol variants, the engine grunt is quite visible.
Customer Feedback of Tata Sierra
- Massive road presence with 1750 kg kerb weight and 19-inch alloy wheels in top variants, Sierra imitates a mini LandRover Defender.
- Imperfect panel gaps are visible in the outside body panels as well as inside the cabin, where the dashboard plastic panels are misaligned.
- Tata should have provided physical buttons for AC control, fog lamps, heater, etc., instead of touch-sensitive controls, which are hard to use while driving, and during the daytime the glowing lights in touch control panels are not visible.
- Wheel alignment issues and a steering left pulling effect at low speeds also exist in Sierra. Users report that after driving through rough patches, the wheel alignment changes frequently.
- The diesel kryojet engine is more peppy to drive compared to the Petrol variants and is also more fuel efficient since it returns 15 to 17 kmpl in city drives.
- Steering response and stability of Tata Sierra at speeds between 100 and 120 kmph is rock solid. With disc Brakes at the front and rear, the braking power is confidence-boosting.
